From apples to heirlooms, Gus Wagenmaker has been a fixture at our Market District for over five decades—and we're thrilled to honour him with a Roots of the Market award as part of our 50th anniversary celebrations.

Gus first joined Market District at the Waterloo Market in 1973, encouraged by fellow vendor Mike McGuire, and quickly made a name for himself selling apples from his family’s farm. One early experiment with bundles of pussy willows (which he sold out of, despite his dad’s doubts!) hinted at the kind of innovative spirit that would define his career.

Over the years, the Wagenmakers Greenhouses evolved from fruit trees to greenhouses, where Gus cultivated over 20 varieties of tomatoes, saving seeds and refining his favourites. Among them: the legendary Chocolate tomato—dark, sweet, and absolutely unforgettable. If you know, you know.

Gus' passion for growing, experimenting, and connecting with his customers has made him a cherished part of our Market family. With 53 years of combined service at the Waterloo and St. Jacobs Farmers’ Markets, Gus truly represents the heart and history of this community.
Congratulations, Gus (and Charlotte too!)—and thank you for bringing such richness to our Market, one tomato at a time. 🍅💚
